JOBTRAINER

WHAT IS THE JOBTRAINER PROGRAM?

The Australian Government has partnered with state and territory governments to establish a $1 billion JobTrainer Fund. The Australian Government committed $500 million in 2020-21, which is being matched by contributions from state and territory governments.

This initial investment will provide around 300,000 additional training places that are free or low fee, in areas of identified skills need such as health, aged and disability care, IT and trades for job seekers and young people, including school leavers. The first Phase of JobTrainer supported over 270,000 enrolments in JobTrainer funded training places. The extension of the Fund will support around 163,000 additional training places.

As part of the 2021-22 Budget, the Australian Government announced it would commit an additional $500 million, to be matched by state and territory governments, to expand the JobTrainer Fund by up to 163,000 places and extend the program until 31 December 2022, subject to state and territory agreement. This will bring the total funding available for free and low-fee training under the Fund to $2 billion. The final number of places will be dependent on the mix of qualifications and short courses and will support training in digital skills and upskilling in critical industries like aged care.

FUNDING

Job seekers and young people, including school leavers, can now take advantage of subsidised training to learn skills for jobs in demand.

JobTrainer funding is available for full qualifications and short courses, based on a list agreed between the National Skills Commission and the state and territory governments. State and territory governments are responsible for determining which qualifications and short courses to prioritise from the agreed list, with focus on training in areas of anticipated employment growth.

Training places under JobTrainer are now available. Further information on the JobTrainer Fund is available on the Your Career website and the My Skills website.
